Calcinaia

Calcinaia, via del centroCalcinaia is a lively and industrious municipality, rich in industry and craftsmanship at the centre of the fertile plains of the Pisan Valdarno.

The name recalls the tradition of ceramic work craftsmanship and the numerous lime furnaces that have been in operation since the 1960s, at a time when trade and industry were dominant, principally in the Fornacette district where production and service ventures were initiated.

Today Calcinaia boasts a strong, primarily industrial, economy comprising small and medium businesses in the metalwork, textile, clothing and tertiary sectors, backed by a qualified network of commercial activities.

The municipality is a critical point of passage in the Pisa province road network, in much the same way as it was an important junction for controlling the river traffic of the basin of the Arno in the early ages.

In honour of the patron Saint Ubaldesca Taccini, the Regata Storica is a rowing contest held on the river Arno in the month of May and the three town neighbourhoods take part. The competition echoes the early activity of the navicellai, sailors and navigators, who transported sand, roman brick and timber on large boats ("navicelli") from Calcinaia to the port of Livorno.

The great curve of the Arno is the setting for one of the most important competition venues for national and international sports fishing. Greenlandia fun park is nearby and, set on the shore of an artificial lake, it is the ideal location for children and families.
