Casciana Terme

Casciana Terme, stabilimento termaleFrom its position within a ring of beautiful hilly landscape, Casciana has always been closely connected to its lime-sulphur thermal springs that are constantly at a temperature of 36°C. The thermal water, called Acqua Mathelda, has always been used to fight arthritis, rheumatism and sciatica. With the passing of the years it has seen its uses expand to modern therapies of motor rehabilitation in cardiovascular and inhalation treatments.

Although already recorded by the Romans, legend has it that the thermal water was discovered by the Countess Matilde di Canossa, who had an old and poorly blackbird. One day the noble lady noticed that the blackbird was moving with greater ease and that the feathers had regained their colour; she had him followed to discover that every morning he immersed himself in the "smoking water". The Countess also wished to immerse herself in the water, and noticed remarkable benefits in a short time. Since then the blackbird has been the symbol of the thermal baths.

Currently both the thermal baths with the outdoor swimming pool and rehabilitation centre and the elegant new structure of Villa Borri offer health, relaxation and wellbeing cures and treatments.

Casciana Terme, Gran CaffèThe town square with the Gran Caffè and the thermal park has always been considered the focal point of town life and the busy calendar of events that take place all year round. Especially entertaining is the regional election of Miss Toscana in August and the Children's Festival on San Genesio's day.

The surrounding neighbourhoods offer wonderful views of the Pisan Hills and are ideal settings for enjoyable walks or cycling excursions with the additional treat of wine and olive oil tasting in the agricultural businesses. At Parlascio recent excavations have uncovered Etruscan artefacts; Collemontanino boasts a small 10th century church and the remains of a fortress.
