Chianni

Chianni, panoramaChianni lies in a setting surrounded by woods and hills where the olives, harvested for centuries, have become a product of the highest quality. This results in the production of Chianni extra virgin olive oil, a deeply coloured, light oil with a low acidity level and fruity flavour.

Chianni is originally Etruscan and was a medieval castle sought after by the Bishop of Volterra and the Republic of Pisa until it finally and definitively passed to Florentine rule. With the exception of Pieve di San Donato this town does not boast any attraction of particular historical relevance but is, however, the perfect destination for excursions and culinary itineraries.

Its wooded areas are well trodden by those who partake in wild boar hunting. Every second and third weekend in November one of Tuscany's oldest festivals takes place in honour of the wild boar. Visitors can taste dishes made from this species and other specialties of traditional farming cuisine prepared by the ladies of the zone.

The surrounding area features the medieval hamlet of Rivalto, with the Madonna del Carmine Sanctuary. For anyone who loves "marrone", a type of thin skinned chestnut, Rivalto is the place to be in October.
