The landscape is made up of alternating plains, hills and mountains teeming with springs and caves dug into the limestone, dotted with medieval hamlets and fortresses, Romanesque pievi and churches and distinctive terraced olive groves.

Just a glance at this natural setting of towns and hamlets perched on the mountains can take in a view from the mountains to the sea and, on the clear days, as far as the Islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

As the Pisan side of the Mountain is affected by the proximity of the sea, the landscape varies from vineyards in the lower parts, then terraced olive groves, to gradually travel upwards to find oak and chestnut woods inhabited by various species of wild fauna.

The entire area has an abundance of cool, curing water that has long been the cornerstone to this hydro-thermal heritage that is demonstrated by the Medici aqueducts, which has survived almost intact, and the thermal baths of San Giuliano and Uliveto.

Thanks to an old Medieval road network throughout the territory and the mild and often sunny climate, the whole area is perfect for excursions, horse riding, bike rides or trekking up the steep slopes of the mountains, in a natural setting of thriving biodiversity.
