Orciano Pisano

Orciano PisanoOrciano is set on a rolling hillside and is in the centre of a land steeped in natural and culinary heritage. The paths and the 'vie bianche' trails grant visitors the opportunity to break away from the hectic city life and stroll or cycle freely through the fields and hills.

While the medieval castle was recorded as long ago as the 8th century, the origins of Orciano are unknown. Popular opinion claims that it rose under the rule of a family of Lombardi origins.

It is easy to imagine that Orciano followed the fate of other hamlets in the Pisan Hills, falling into the hands of the Florentines with the defeat of Pisa to then be adapted to the Grand Ducal regime. On 14 August 1846 a violent earthquake ravaged the town, hitting all of the Pisan Hills area.

The 14th century church, Chiesa di San Michele, contains a copy of the hagiographic canvas depicting Saint Michael the Archangel by Raphael and is worth a visit.
