Ponsacco
Its strategic importance, due to its placement on the border between the republic of Pisa and Florence, saw Ponsacco as the arena of numerous conflicts. The current historical centre was founded in this period, at the time surrounded by bastions and a wall and later destroyed by the Florentines.
Ponsacco is known as the City of Furniture and Furnishings: the second post-war period witnessed the development of a number of small craftwork businesses centred on the production of items of furniture and furnishing and that tradition continues to this day. The Permanent Furniture Exhibition was founded in 1947 on the initiative of the furniture makers of Ponsacco, comprising seven floors that house over one hundred displays of bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, drawing rooms and furnishing. One of the leading options for visitors is the Wood Museum where the early carpentry workshops and the tools used to construct furniture are brought back to life.
Ponsacco does not hold particular artistic attraction, with the exception of the Oratory of the Madonna della Tosse with 14th century terracotta attributed to Luca della Robbia, and the Church of San Giovanni with the baptismal font.
At the centre of a private estate is the feudal hamlet of Camugliano with Villa Niccolini, formerly a villa belonging to the Medici family it is an interesting port of call for visitors.
The municipal territory is primarily level and urbanised. The only green air pocket besides the Estate of Camugliano is the leisure area of Poggini, an ideal place for outings on foot or bicycle.
