Vicopisano medieval festival
On Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 of September at Vicopisano lamps are turned off and visitors wander through the side streets, hustle and bustle, town squares and neighbourhood squares by torchlight and the unexpected blaze of the fire-eaters and acrobatic jugglers.
This is the start of the eleventh Medieval Festival in one of the most suggestive hamlets in Tuscany, which has survived practically unaltered over the centuries boasting towers, Palazzo Pretorio and the Fortress designed by Brunelleschi in the period of Florentine reign.
The festival has grown in importance over the years, due mainly to the successful union of the marvellous historical centre of Vicopisano and the convincing reconstruction of the medieval setting that the participants put into play.
This uniquely architectural setting plays host to historical groups, medieval camps, travelling musicians and themed theatrical shows making this Festival an even more exciting and intense experience for visitors as it strives to immerse visitors in the medieval atmosphere, while being clearly recreational.
For the first time this year everyone has the opportunity to join in the medieval dinner which is served at the tables in the square behind Palazzo Pretorio. Places are, however, limited and cost 45 Euro, including admission. This is an excellent chance to taste dishes taken from medieval recipes and carefully prepared with ingredients in keeping with the era.
Admission to the festival costs 6 Euro and admission is free for children and anyone who turns up at the ticket desks in medieval garb: this is a special reward for those who wish to get involved in the Festival climate! Don't forget that the ticket desk will also exchange tender, one euro for a florin.
