Wine

The red or white, rosé or amabile wines produced primarily in the hill areas of this territory enhance the flavours of any foods, cooked or otherwise, and all of the typical dishes of the province of Pisa cuisine.

The product par excellence of the Pisa area is the "Nettare di Bacco" wine, as it was called by the ancient Romans.

A fascinating tour of the wine producing tradition and the production of the quality vines  (white and red, dry and amabile) starts from the Colline Pisane or Pisan Hills, which are typically covered in vines, as far as Valdera, where rows of vines are alternated with the terraced olive groves and orchards, and to some zones of the Val di Cecina, or Cecina Valley. This tour takes in the cellars, the vines and the wine tasting sessions, uncovers the beauty of the architecture, environment and food and wine of the territory and presents a calendar of village sagre, festivals, market shows and reviews.

The province of Pisa is crossed by two Wine Roads or routes created within the territory that merge wine production with the attractive landscape, art, culture and history that encompass and identify them.

The Wine Route of the Etruscan Coast is shared with the province of Livorno and goes through some municipalities of Val di Cecina and counts the Montescudaio DOC as Pisan wines. This route presents two qualities of wine: Red (an intense colour and perfume, dry and full bodied) and White, led by the straw yellow colour and fruity aroma of the Trebbiano Toscano.

The Wine Route of the Pisan Hills passes through municipalities of the province of Pisa and features the Chianti DOCG of the Colline Pisane (a quiet red wine for any occasion, that improves with age); the white San Torpè DOC (a dry, balanced and delicate taste and lively aroma) and the Vin Santo San Torpè DOC.

The red, white and rosè ITG Toscano are also produced throughout the entire territory.

All year round the Wine Route treats fortunate visitors and wine lovers alike to hamlets and centres of art that are well worth visiting, heartfelt welcome and hospitality, especially in the agriturismo or country houses, and the chance to visit the cellars or vineyards and take part in wine tastings, perhaps also with some local products.
