Tombolo Estate

Tenuta di Tmbolo, La pineta

Tenuta di Tombolo is south of San Rossore, with its pine forests occupying a territory that extends from the Arno as far as the Navicelli canal, to Livorno, along the stretch of the Aurelia.

The Tenuta or estate forms the southernmost part of the Regional Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli and encompasses the coasts of Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia and Calambrone, comprising places of historical interest, such as the Basilica of S. Piero a Grado, vast agricultural areas, pastures, pine forests and woods that suited to moderate temperatures, in an extremely varied landscape, with vegetation very similar to that present in the area of San Rossore, a thriving habitat for a number of animal species.

The territory of the Tenuta has been formed over the centuries with the advancement of the coast, which explains the alternations of wet depressions (called “lame”), remains of the early swamps, and dunes called “tomboli”, from which the Tenuta takes its name.

The coastal area of the Tenuta of Tombolo is a hive of seaside structures, along Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia and Calambrone; but, behind each structure and stretch of sand there are still strips of natural dunes.

There are two Oases in the territory of the Tenuta di Tombolo run by the WWF Oasi Litorale Pisano: The Woods of the Cornacchiaia plains and the Dunes of Tirrenia, dunes close to the sea, beaten by the wind and colonised by important pioneer species such as the ammophila grass and the shrubby Mediterranean scrub.

After the property changed hands on various occasions since the Medieval period, in 2004 the entire property, land and furniture passed to the University of Pisa that entrusted its running and management a centre of agricultural and company research. Also in 2004, the land of the Centre qualified to become part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve named "Selva Pisana".
