The Park of Flavours

Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Park, entryA little more than a third of the overall surface area of Park Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli is used for farming. This portion is farmed by around 200 bodies that combine to contribute to one of the primary economic activities of the Park.

The mark mankind has left on land of the Park is evident. In some areas wild vegetation has been swapped for agricultural crops, mainly grains and forage, or space has been cleared for rearing cattle, horses and sheep.

The agricultural areas are most commonly found in the Tenute, or estates, of San Rossore, Coltano and Tombolo, chiefly for crop production and livestock breeding, in keeping with the basic agricultural and biological compatibility, to promote the integration between rural development and the restoration and maintenance of the biodiversity to guarantee the safeguarding of the natural habitats.

Fruit and vegetables are chiefly grown in the flood plain areas of the river Serchio and in the Padule Meridionale as the particular fertility of the land promotes growth, especially in spinach and tomato, but also favours vegetable and flower growth.

Poultry farming is also common to this area, primarily pheasants in voliera, turkey and laying hens, with important settlements in the northerly zone of the Park.

Companies within the Park Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli are relentlessly committed to improving the systems of agriculture and developing the biological productions, also with the institution of a “Mark of Quality” on the part of the Park Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Official Body as a guarantee of typical local products, free of all chemical agents.

San Rossore, Bottega del ParcoInside the Tenuta San Rossore the Bottega del Parco, real and proper "shop of taste", is open to the public and is a reference point for the purchase and the tasting of typical and local products of quality of the Park. On one side of the shop is a beautiful display counter of fresh specialities, among which are the meats of the Tenuta San Rossore: the Pisan cow, called “mucco pisano”, bred for at least five centuries in the area of the Park; the lamb and the “nera massese” sheep, the most important Tuscan sheep breed.

At the Sterpaia and Coltano Visitors Centre, guests can taste and purchase the local produce of the Park.
