Museum of Sacred Art - Volterra
The Diocesan Museum of Religious Art in Volterra contains collections of works originating from the Duomo (Cathedral) and the churches of the diocese: paintings, sculptures, goldsmith art, furnishings, manuscripts, religious hangings and the only surviving marble of the 14th century monuments of the Cathedral with works by Tino di Camaino, Angolo di Venura and Agostino di Giovanni.
The works from the Duomo document and represent the change and evolution of liturgical objects over almost a thousand years and also go as far as to illustrate episodes of the town's history. Of particular note are: the Croce medievale del Capitolo in gilded copper, with the full relief representation of the Cristo Trionfante ad occhi aperti, as was used at the time; the gilded bronze Crucifix by Giambologna; the valuable 1299 Antifonario miniato and the glazed terracotta bust of San Lino, a Volterra native and the first pope after Saint Peter, by Giovanni Della Robbia.
Works from other churches include: the 14th century Annunciazione lignea of the Pieve di Tojano, the 1512 Pala di Villamagna by Rosso Fiorentino, the 16th century Madonna enthroned with Child and Saints Peter and Paul by Daniele da Volterra and the 15th century Madonna and Saints from San Cipriano and recently attributed to Benozzo Gozzoli.
