Picture Gallery and Civic Museum - Volterra
The Art Gallery (Pinacoteca) and the Volterra Civic Museum are located in the Palazzo Minucci-Solaini. The Gallery features a remarkable group of paintings by Florentine, Sienese and Volterran artists.
The valuable wooden panels from the Florentine and Sienese schools, with polyptychs by Taddeo di Bartolo (Madonna enthroned with Child and Saints, signed and dated 1411) and Cenni di Francesco are exhibited alongside panels by Luca Signorelli (Annunciation) and Ghirlandaio (Christ in glory between saints and the client, abbot Giusto Bonvicini).
The most famous work and a true jewel of the collection is Descent from the Cross by Rosso Fiorentino, due to the modernity of the scene and the amazing depiction of tragedy portrayed through the arrangement of the figures and the complex workings of the composition.
In addition to the painting works there are 6th- and 12th-century marble sculptures, a 15th-century group of wooden sculptures by Francesco di Valdambrino, a rich medallion collection with works by Pisanello and Matteo de’ Pasti, and an interesting collection containing objects of absolute coinage interest.
